Dress a Girl Around the World
Our Dress a Girl Around the World ministry, which the St. Basil Philoptochos started in 2012, is a strong on-going program. We make dresses out of pillowcases and/or material, adding pockets and embellishments and send to the needy children. A new pair of panties is tucked in the pocket of each dress, and our young children make bracelets and/or necklaces to put in the other pocket. We have also begun sewing pants for the young boys in need, and along with each pair of pants adding a new pair of underwear.
Each year an invitation is mailed to each Philoptochos chapter in the Chicago Metropolis area inviting them to participate in our Metropolis-wide sew-a-thon in October ~~ making the date as close as possible to the Philoptochos’ Saints Day, “Saints Cosmas and Damianos”.
To date we have shipped dresses and pants to Haiti, Zambia, Philippines, Kenya, and India, along with areas of our own country. We extend an invitation to all of our parishioners and friends, albeit women, men, or teen age children, to join us. Check our church bulletin for dates of workshops, and for the October date of our Annual Metropolis-wide sew-a-thon.
